Nancy hung up. Then she moved to the store phone and dialed the extension of Mr. Fitzhugh"s secretary.
âGrace, this is Nancy Drew,â Nancy said when the secretary answered the phone. âDo you know if anyone from Danner and Bishop has opened a corporate account with Omni Aviation?â
âJust a minute, Nancy,â said Grace. âI"ll check with Mark Hoffman. He"s the one who handles those accounts.â
Nancy waited impatiently. Out of the corner of her eye, she watched Nick Holt.
After a few minutes, Grace came back on the line.
âNancy? As far as Mark knows, no one from Danner and Bishop has ever rented a helicopter.â
âThanks, Grace,â said Nancy. She hung up and bit her lip thoughtfully. She decided it was time to talk to Joe Dane. He would obviously be able to shed some light on the helicopter business. She walked over to Nick Holt.
âBy the way, have you seen Joe?â she asked.
âJoe? Yeah, I saw him heading for the basement a little while ago,â Nick said.
âThanks,â Nancy said and started to walk away. She wondered if Nick would follow her again, and she was relieved when he didn"t.
Bennett Lloyd had forgotten to show Nancy the basement when he gave her a tour of the store. When she got down there, Nancy found herself in a maze of 71
long, shadowy corridors. The hallways were really a series of narrow ramps. The ceiling in the basement was low, with pipes just overhead.
Nancy walked down one of the hallways looking for Joe Dane.
âJoe?â she called tentatively. âJoe, are you down here?â
She turned a corner and started down another steep ramp. But she soon stopped when she found that the corridor came to a dead end.
âGreat going, Nancy,â she said out loud. She turned to walk back the way she had come.
But the passageway was blocked. It took Nancy a moment to realize that it was an enormous iron dolly filled with metal cabinets that was blocking her way out.
But the dolly wasn"t just standing at the end of the corridor. It was zooming down the ramp out of control, racing straight at her!
Nancy was trapped, hemmed in on all sides. There was no way out.
